MECHANICAL:

  1. American National Standards Institute – ANSI B71.4-2017 Ride-on Mowers Safety Specifications. Safety standards for control systems, guards, seats, labels, stability, braking, blade stop time, blade speed, blade sudden stop, thrown object, finger probe, foot probe, operator presence switches, etc.
  2. CE Declaration of Conformity. Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC. Required for all the European Union. Covers all the ANSI requirements above plus electromagnetic, noise, and vibration testing listed below.

ELECTRONICS:

  1. Electromagnetic Compatibility: 2004/108/EC + 2014/30/EC. Required for protection radio wave interference from electrical systems.
  2. Noise Emission: 2000/14/EC. Guaranteed sound power level testing. Exceeds standards.
  3. ROHS: 2011/65/EC. Electronic material makeup directive.

BATTERY:

UN/DOT 38.3 Transportation Testing for Lithium Batteries. Includes testing of Mean Green batteries to the following standards. All Mean Green batteries have passed all below required tests for this certification.

T1 – ALTITUDE SIMULATION

This is low pressure testing that simulates unpressurized airplane space (cargo area) at 15,000 meter altitude.

T2 – THERMAL TEST

This test covers changes in temperature extremes from -40C to +75C (-40F to +167F).

T3 – VIBRATION

This test simulates vibration during transportation.

T4 – SHOCK

This test also simulates vibration during transportation such as dropping entire pack onto concrete.

T5 – EXTERNAL SHORT CIRCUIT

This test simulates an external short.

T6 – IMPACT

This test is only applicable to primary and secondary cells and includes piercing of cells.

T7 – OVERCHARGE

This test is for secondary or rechargeable batteries only. It simulates an overcharge condition on a rechargeable battery: 2x the manufacturer’s recommended charge current for 24 hours.

T8 – FORCED DISCHARGE

This testing simulates a forced discharge condition (excessive discharge in case of BMS malfunction) for primary and secondary cells only.

OPERATOR:

  1. Noise: Complies with EN ISO 60335-2-77. Passes sound power and sound pressure level for pedestrian and operator ear.
  2. Vibration: Complies with ISO 5349 HAV.  Hand and Arm Vibration testing.  All Mean Green models pass with up to 24 hours/day usage allowed (most gas mowers are limited to 4-6 hours/day usage in Europe due to this requirement).  Complies with ISO 2631-1 WBV.  Whole Body Vibration testing.  All Mean Green models pass with up to 12 hours/day usage allowed (most gas mowers are limited to 3-4 hours/day usage in Europe due to this requirement).

UL and Other standards:  Many individual testing companies have their own standards that contribute to the above standards.  For example, NEC (National Electric Code) has many standards that are within UL, CE and ANSI standards.  UL (Underwriting Laboratories) has standards for wire size, current flow, switching, and material composition.  UL states it is similar to the CE marking organization for European standards.  Sample UL standards include: UL 44 (insulated wires), UL 62 (flex cords and cables), UL 94 (plastic flame test), UL 248-1 (Low volt fuses), UL 486E (wiring terminals), UL 1447 (electric mower corded and battery), UL 4248-1 (fuse holders), and UL 60730-2-9 (temperature sensing controls) to name a few.  Mean Green Mowers comply.
